How to prepare your WEST COAST HOME for WINTER!

11/8/2017 (Permalink)

General How to prepare your WEST COAST HOME for WINTER! One really good tip for homeowners during the winter months is to remove all outdoor hoses and drain the pipes to prevent any ruptures

A few helpful tips to prevent any Water or Fire damage:

Yard Preparation - Remove all outdoor hoses and drain the pipes to prevent any ruptures from freezing and potential backups into the house. If you have an in ground sprinkler system drain it all well. This can be done using a siphon technique or more simply by using an air compressor.

Inspect Your Window and Doors - There is nothing worse than having a cool draft flowing through your home in the winter. Visually inspect the interior and exterior of all your windows and doors for any gaps in the seals. These can be fixed by using caulking and weather striping as well as draft stopper that fit on interior doors; a rolled towel is also great hack that works for this too.

Attic/Crawl Space - You should check for any small animals making a home in the attic or crawl space (ie. raccoons, squirrels etc.) Check that the ventilation is properly fitted to allow air flow and nothing else. Check that there is adequate insulation and that it is spread evenly.

Clean Your Eavestroughs - Clean the leaves and debris from your gutters to prevent water back up. All downspouts should be cleared and pointed away from the buildings foundation so that water doesn’t pool. Water in the eavestroughs can cause problem when the weather reaches freezing. It can damage your soffit and fascia as well as create a dangerous falling hazard for ice.

Chimney Maintenance - If you have a chimney that is used regularly it is important to have it serviced. Inspect the exterior smoke stack for any damage, like cracks in the mortar and loose bricks and have they repaired accordingly. It is also a good idea to have the chimney sweep to remove and soot that may cause a fire risk. If the chimney is out of use then make sure the damper is closed or you use a chimney balloon to block unwanted heat escape.

Four Principles of Odor Control

Air Scrubber on the job

Biohazard Air Scrubber on the job Air Scrubber

What are air scrubbers?
An air scrubbeis a portable filtration system that removes particles, gasses, and/or chemicals from the air within a given area. These machines draw air in from the surrounding environment and pass it through a series of filters to remove contaminants. The size and complexity of an air scrubber system will depend on the size of the space being serviced, as well as the range, type, and size of contaminants that must be removed from the area.

Why should I use an air scrubber?
Air scrubbers are especially important on restoration jobs where airborne contaminants are present or will be created/disturbed during the restoration process, such as mold, dust, asbestos, lead, chemical fumes, etc. These hazardous particles can settle on carpet, upholstery, and furnishings, or be drawn into the HVAC system and contaminate other parts of a building.

If these contaminants are not removed, they will have a negative effect on the indoor air quality (IAQ) of the worksite. While naturally occurring particles, such as human skin cells, animal hair, and dirt, are nearly always present, toxic gases released by sewage-borne bacteria and mold spores can cause adverse human health effects when inhaled. In short, these contaminants can compromise the quality of the entire restoration job.

Air scrubbers help protect the health of workers and building occupants by providing a clean and healthy environment. They also help protect contractors from costly liability claims resulting from damage caused by hazardous airborne materials.

Does Your Langley Home Have A Mold Problem?

4/14/2017 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation Does Your Langley Home Have A Mold Problem? In Langley, mold can spread through a home in as little as 48 hours.

Microscopic mould spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mould remediation reduces the mould spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mould, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mould spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mould growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mould problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mould infestation.
